Art Knows No Limits – Burnt Children Come Together to Create

Central Region Burn Rehabilitation Center, which was founded by Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation and commissioned by the Taichung City Hall, held a painting exhibition for burnt children on September 8. After numerous rounds of surgery, treatments and intensive rehabilitation, the children have demonstrated remarkable recovery progress. During the summer vacation, they dedicated themselves to learning painting, and now they are ready to share the fruits of their recovery and artworks through this exhibition. Social Affairs Bureau Deputy Director General Kun-huang Chen attended the function to offer the children words of encouragement, hoping they can embrace their imperfections and their life in the future.
For today's exhibition, patient Xiao Hua (alias) shared his paintings with the guests. At the age of 10, Xiao Hua sustained burns to 50% of his body including his face, fingers, and lower limbs. As a result, Xiao Hua was forced to suspend his schooling, moved to a rented house in Taichung with his parents and older sister so that he can receive rehabilitation at the burn rehabilitation center. In order to let Xiao Hua keep up with schoolwork, social workers from the rehabilitation center and the school cooperated to provide him with home education. Moreover, they continue to visit him at home and arranged for counseling to ameliorate his psychological trauma, so that he can embrace the future with an optimistic attitude.
According to the Social Affairs Bureau, this is the 5th year that Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation's summer break painting class is being held, seeing participation from 16 children ranging between 5 and 12 years old. Some children have suffered burns to their hands, limiting the dexterity of their fingers due to hypertrophic and atrophic scars. Nonetheless, their passion for painting has overcome these difficulties, encouraging them to splash colors onto the canvas, conveying positive energy and spirit of facing and overcoming setbacks.
Social Affairs Bureau elaborated that the Central Region Burn Rehabilitation Center's professional staff provides comprehensive rehabilitation services to help burn patients get through the golden period of rehabilitation after they are discharged from the hospital. Furthermore, they will be able to return to society and pursue a new life with the assistance of social workers.
Additionally, after the Formosa Fun Coast Dust Explosion, the city hall has allocated all of the donations to the Central Region Burn Rehabilitation Center established by Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation and commissioned by Taichung City Hall. The center provides burn patients with comprehensive services including lectures, support groups, assistive solutions, and career counseling, etc. So far, the center has offered assistance to 89 persons, serving an equivalent (total) of 15,316 persons.
Social Affairs Bureau suggested that it will continue collaborating with Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation to engage in burn rehabilitation services for individual patients, thereby turning the Central Region Burn Rehabilitation Center into a pillar of strength for burn patients to embrace their lives once again.
