Rotary International Visits Taichung City Hall – Mayor Lu Appeals Everyone to Fight for People's Welfare

Rotary International District 3461 Director Tung-lung Hsieh led a delegation to visit Taichung City Mayor Shiow-yen Lu on September 23 to market the anti-drug school fair due to kick off on October 27. Mayor Lu thanked Rotary International for its ongoing contributions to Taichung City, hoping that it will continue to devote resources to areas such as remote townships, disadvantaged communities, education, and sports in order to fight for the welfare of the citizens.
According to Rotary International District 3461 Director Tung-lung Hsieh, the district has collaborated with the government for numerous projects and services. In particular, the Rotary International Day – Anti-drug School Fair was held at the Wenxin Forest Park on October 27. Besides promoting anti-drug awareness, the event also showcases the Rotary International's accomplishments in polio prevention over the last 3 decades. In addition, The Rotary Foundation has donated nearly US$180,000 to launch the hepatitis C prevention campaign, focusing on regions with a high prevalence of hepatitis c to conduct screening and promotion.
Mayor Lu commented that she is glad that Rotary International and the city government has co-hosted the anti-drug school fair; it is hoped the event will communicate anti-drug awareness to the public in everyday life. The Rotary International has offered a great deal of assistance to underprivileged families over the years, and Mayor Lu hopes that it will continue to take care of disadvantaged children in remote townships.
Social Affairs Bureau Deputy Director-General Chung-liang Chen also expressed his gratitude to the Rotary International for donating money to help promote education and employment for disadvantaged children. He said that the Social Affairs Bureau has combined government funding with resources from the Rotary International to launch Development Fund for the Future Education of Children and Youths, where a specific sum of money is remitted to the disadvantaged children's account every month to help them seek education or employment. The initiative is significant and meaningful in the sense that it serves as the impetus driving the future growth of these children.
Mayor Lu suggested that early childhood education is extremely important, therefore the Development Fund for the Future Education of Children and Youths plays a vital part in this regard. By definition, disadvantaged children do not receive adequate resources to help them develop, thus the account approach will be applied to provide them with a sound foundation.
Today, Rotary International District 3461 Director Tung-lung Hsieh led a delegation consisting of Secretary-General Sheng-tsung Wang, CIS Committee Chairperson Tsung-li Huang, Club Service Projects Committee Chairperson Hung-ming Hsu, Rotary International Day Chairperson Chiung-tang Yang, Annual Convention Chairperson Cheng-ta Hsu, Annual Convention Secretary-General Kao-shan Hsu, Annual Convention Deputy Secretary-General I-chia Chang, Public Image Committee Chairperson Jui-chi Chiang, and Hepatitis C Prevention Committee Chairperson Chun-hung Chen to meet with Mayor Lu in the city hall. Mayor Lu was accompanied by city hall officials including Education Bureau Director-General Chen-sheng Yang, Urban Development Bureau Director-General Wen-pin Huang, Social Affairs Bureau Deputy Director-General Chung-liang Chen, and Health Bureau Deputy Director General Jui-lin Chang.
