Taichung City Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities by Recognizing Social Models of Disability

  Taichung City Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities by Recognizing Social Models of Disability
 
To celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd, the Taichung City Government on November 30th held a garden party at the square in front of the Civic Building where 60 stands of the participating disabled sold various items including gourmet foods, fresh brewed coffee and handicrafts. Additionally, 37 community caring centers for the disabled were also invited to design fun challenge games and experiential zone for parents of the disabled with the aim for the public to get to know more about disabilities. The Taichung City Government also recognized 17 social models of disability, care givers, and advocates for rights of the disabled.
Director General of Social Affairs Bureau, Peng Huai-chen, attended the opening ceremony of garden party and presented awards to various social models of disability. He said since this year marks the 5th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), many friends with disabilities began to shine. For example, one of the award receivers, Yu Ting, with the severe form of cerebral palsy, but two years ago, she began to express himself by attending painting and speech classes offered by the Taiwan Painting Talk Association and gained confidence. She is now very confident and optimistic. Her transformation allows people to understand the great potential of the disabled.
According to the Social Affairs Bureau, each year, the event on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities has been held utilizing the Distribution Fund of the Taichung City Lottery Dividends with the aim to increase social participation of the disabled and to promote the rights of the disabled. Furthermore, the City Government first provides the elderly services for parents of the disabled to encourage those who need to take care of their disabled children but at the same time, face bodily dysfunction and disabilities to jointly receive community services with their children. This year, this program has served about 29,063 people.

There were also events of “I am a Little YouTuber” of the guided dog tour and “I am a Little Painter” in today’s garden party to attract family participation and to educate people on the rights of the disabled.
