Domestic violence incidents are becoming a frequent occurrence in Taiwan, in order to foster the correct violence prevention awareness, Taichung City Social Affairs Bureau (SAB) hosted the Violence Prevention Creative Contest by bringing together the power of the community and online media. In particular, Guike Community Development Association from Daan District integrated civic organizations, schools, and the police system to create the Violence Prevention Safety Turtle website; community lecturer Hsieh Chun-Mei visited people door-to-door in order to promote the violence prevention hotline, earning the community development association and herself the no. 1 prize in this year's group and individual category respectively.
SAB organized the Zero Violence and Zero Tolerance – Violence Prevention Creative Contest and the 2019 Taichung City Violence Prevention Planner at the Taichung City Government Yangming Civic Center on 11/7, where Guike Community Development Association from Daan District, the first place of the group category, will represent Taichung to participate in the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), Executive Yuan's Community Violence Primary Prevention Promotion and Contest to vie for the top prize and top honor for Taichung.
According to SAB Director-General Peng Huai-Chen, the issue of domestic violence and child protection has been brought up constantly in recent years, highlighting the importance of primary prevention promotion. Taichung City Center for Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault has held the violence prevention creative contest for 8 straight years since 2011. In addition to training community members and private organizations, as well as understanding the different forms and characteristics of violence in different regions, local resources are utilized to facilitate violence prevention work.
In addition, the city government became the first municipality to train violence prevention planners in 2016, who in turn conducts violence prevention-related lectures in communities. Violence prevention planner Lin Li-Chuan received the Violence Prevention Bronze Award today, while certificates of qualification were issued to 34 violence prevention planners, hoping that they will continue to engage in violence prevention promotion in order to protect the citizens' safety.
