Promotion of Gender Equality with Budaixi in Taichung

The Social Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government today (the 29th) invited the Wu Chou Yaun Palm Puppet Troupe to perform the amazing hand puppet show, "the Female Knight- Xi Duo" at the Evergreen Senior Services Center to promote gender equality. The show was operated by the eldest grandson of Taiwan’s palm puppet master, Huang Hai-Dai and the winner of the National Heritage Award, Huang Wen-Lang and his troupe members. Additionally, a seminar was organized after the performance to discuss with the attendees the issue of gender equality and gifts of palm puppets were given away to the quiz winners!
According to Director General of the Social Affairs Bureau, Peng Huai-Chen, "the Female Knight- Xi Duo" was a winner among this year’s gender equality films on "Creativity of Gender Power." The Director utilized the elements of Budaixi (palm puppet show) to portray the stereotype images towards the female in the society in the past to promote gender equality. With innovative creativity and vivid screens, the film was unanimously highly praised by the judges.
Director General Peng said that in order to let more people actually see and feel the combination of traditional theater culture and gender equality, the Wu Chou Yaun Palm Puppet Troupe was especially invited to present the film in Budaixi format in a condensed manner. The audience was reminded of theatre culture in their childhood time and at the same time, they could correlate their experiences with gender equality.
The Bureau pointed out that through the interactive and interesting Budaixi performance, the public will pay more attention to gender equality.
