Shalun Kailu Shelter Studio Helps Improve Self-caring Abilities for the Disabled

In addition to Qingshui and Wuqi shelter studios on the coastal area of Taichung, the Taichung City Government Social Affairs Bureau has continuously opened new shelter factories. The first shelter Studio, "Kailu Shelter Studio," named for the mission as a "pioneer" for the disabled in the Shalu area was opened which was entrusted to the Maria Social Welfare Foundation. Today (the 5th), the opening ceremony was organized and when attending the ceremony, Director General of the Bureau, Peng Hui-Chen, said he hopes that the shelter studio will serve the disabled living on the coastal area by training them in self-caring skills and preparing for future career development.
"This is a new shelter studio," said Director General Peng. In order to balance urban and rural development, his Bureau integrated resources provided by the local and central government. On the coastal area, the new Shalu Shelter Studio was open to provide good care and services for the disabled and their family members living in the rural areas. The Taichung City Government planned to continuously set up shelter studios in the Xitun District, North District and Wuqi District to reach the number of 25 for the provision of more convenient community services near the disabled.
The Bureau pointed out that Xiaoyu, a trainee at the shelter studio (with middle level of intellectual disability, 19 years old), is very lovely and when she studied in Taichung Special Education School, she took a part in an off-campus cleaning activity. She often went to adjacent parks to help with some cleaning work. She possessed basic cleaning knowledge and skills. After coming to the shelter studio, Xiaoyu made great improvement on cleaning (as a cleaner and sub-contracted worker) and independent living skills. Additionally, using a workout passport, diet control and exercises designed by professionals, Xiaoyu successfully lost seven kilos of body weight within three months. Now she is healthier.
The Bureau said the burden to a family with a disabled member will be lessened when the disabled member is cared for and served. If the disabled is not able to enter other shelter service centers, they still can learn how to live independently, express themselves, interact with others and learn skills necessary for their living at the shelter studio and they will be able to enrich their life and prepare for their future career.
The Kailu Shelter Studio in Shalu District is located at #1082, 7th Section, Taiwan Boulevard and is open between Mondays and Fridays from 8:30 to 16:30 where they provide cleaning and sub-contracted worker training as well as assistance to the planning for independent life and diverse cultural and recreational activities. Each trainee is charged for the materials and daily necessity fees at the monthly amount of NT$3,000 (plus lunch fees). For those in need, please call Social Worker Wang at the Maria Social Welfare Foundation at 04-26624929.
At today’s opening ceremony, the Maria Social Welfare Foundation gave free trials of their home made dried pineapple, pineapple jam and pineapple cakes to call for the public support for products made by the disabled and local fruit farmers. Attendees of the Ceremony included Vice Speaker of the Taichung City Council, Yen Li-Min, Councilmen Yang Ding-Chung and Chen Ting-Hsiao, and Director of Shalu District, Liao Tsai-Chung. Speaker of the Taichung City Council, Chang Ching-Chao and Councilman Wang Li-Ren also sent their representatives to show their support. (3/5*18)* The Social Affairs Bureau
