The Social Affairs Bureau explains that Hari Raya Idul Fitri is a global Muslim festival that celebrates the end of Ramadan. On this day, Muslim people will wear festive clothes, visit relatives and friends and share delicacies just like Chinese people do during the Chinese New Year. Through the Hari Raya Idul Fitri conscientiously organized by Taichung Beitun Women and New Immigrants Center, new Muslim immigrants who are unable to go home and unite with their families due to the pandemic can enjoy the festive atmosphere as if they were back home.
Besides, like the Chinese New Year red envelope, the “green envelope” of Hari Raya Idul Fitri is distributed to the parents to show one’s ability to earn money and take care of the family. The “green envelope” distributed during today’s event has candies and a small blessing card written in Indonesian inside, and is hoped to deliver a blessing to new immigrants.
The Bureau expresses that, as of the end of this February, Taichung City’s new immigrant population is ranked fifth in the country. To facilitate the professional development of even more new immigrants and local women, and to provide communities with universal welfare services, Taichung City has established 8 Women and New Immigrants Centers; and 1 Women and New Immigrants Empowering Platform. Among them, Beitun Women and New Immigrants Center has commissioned the Good Shepherd Social Welfare Foundation to provide local women with empowering and welfare services. To facilitate exchange between different cultures in order to raise people's awareness and respect towards cultural diversity and to eliminate stereotypes about gender and new immigrants.
Today, Chief of the Bureau’s Women Welfare and Gender Equality Section, Wang Li-hsin, City Councillor, Hsieh Ming-yuan, and Chief of Jiushe Village, Su Chen-hui, have all attended this grand event.
