Mayor Lu pointed out that, although the pandemic remained critical when National Disabled Games took place in Taichung this year, the City still created historical high records and is positioned in the nation’s second place in terms of the number of medals won. Mayor Lu delivered her special thanks to the athletes for their efforts and coaches for their great contributions over the years.
Mayor Lu expressed that the National Disabled Games was a comprehensive game event at the highest level in the country. This year, Taichung City has created an exceptional performance especially in table tennis. In total, Taichung has won 9 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals in table tennis including 5 from Level 1 to Level 5 male team competitions, indicating the excellent performance of the Taichung sports delegation. Taichung also won 15 gold, 15 silver and 14 bronze medals in swimming: Chen Yu-chi won the gold medals of 100 m backstroke (for the 7th time), 100 m freestyle and 50 m freestyle (for the 5th time); and Chen Shih-yueh who has been the champion since 2016 also succeeded in showing a high-standard performance and keeping the gold medals in Taichung.
Mayor Lu further stated that the City had an even more brilliant performance in track and field with 51 gold, 48 silver and 7 bronze medals, 31 new National Disabled Games records, and 27 new national records. Among all players, Hsu Le who had hearing impairment received 8 gold medals, and broke 3 National Disabled Games records and 1 national record in 100 m and 800 m tracks, and 100 m hurdles; and Lin Chien-hung, the other male athlete, also won 8 gold medals. Both of them have won the most gold medals in the Taichung sports delegation. Other track and field athletes also showed excellent performance, including Cheng Kun-hung (4 gold and 3 silver medals), Chen Yu-hao (4 gold and 1 silver medals) and Chang Hui-ling (4 gold and 1 silver medals).
Mayor Lu said that, although physically disabled athletes might have some difficulty in life, they still performed better than ordinary people. Therefore, apart from their own efforts, the love of society also helped to drive their accomplishment. She also expressed her aspiration that Taichung City Government would be the backbone for everyone, so they could continue to work hard and achieve even better performance.
Director of Sport Bureau Li Yu-jui pointed out that the athletes of Taichung sports delegation had, with their greatest passion for life, done their very best to win the medals this year, and all the athletes, coaches and teams should be thanked for this outstanding result. He also delivered his special thanks to the chairman and director general of each sport committee for supporting the development of sports in Taichung City. He said that, , the city only managed to create historically high records because of their efforts, and that the City Government will continue to build a quality sports environment and cultivate more local sports talents in order to build Taichung City’s strengths in sports.
Today’s event was attended by Mayor Lu, Chairman of Taichung Sports Federation for Individuals with Disabilities Lin Meng-ling, Director of Sport Bureau Li Yu-jui, Director of Social Affairs Bureau Peng Huai-chen, Councilor Hsieh Ming-yuan and principals of all schools.
