Space optimization, service upgradeTaichung Garden of Girls celebrates its reopening.

After a year of earthquake-resistance reinforcement, the first exclusive space for girls in Asia, Taichung Garden of Girls, has been optimized with a new comfortable breastfeeding area and an expanded sports area. Today (23), we celebrated its reopening with an opening tea party. The new space was witnessed by Director Liao Jing-zhi of Social Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government, local residents, online units, and girls. We invite more girls to come and enjoy the new facilities!

Director Liao stated that the building where the Garden of Girls is located was completed around 1976, and earthquake-resistant reinforcement work was needed to provide a more comfortable and safe environment. The Garden of Girls also took the opportunity to optimize its use of space by adding a “Comfortable Nursing” area and an “Exercise and Fitness” space, as well as installing an elevator and gender-friendly restrooms, gradually implementing a gender and disability-friendly environment.

Director Liao pointed out that actually, a year before the seismic retrofitting, the Garden of Girls underwent a transformation because it was selected as an innovative demonstration site by the Social and Family Affairs Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2021. At that time, a natural and simple MUJI style was adopted, and girls were invited to participate in the renovation to meet their practical needs and incorporate their imagination and creativity. A photo studio and recording studio were added, and various “girl” spaces to make the building more versatile and flexible to use.

The Social Affairs Bureau explained that in response to the United Nations' emphasis on investing in girls and empowering them to obtain their rights and care, the bureau established the first “Taichung Garden of Girls” in Taiwan in 2015. It primarily serves girls aged 15 to 23, providing a space for gender awareness empowerment, advocacy for relevant issues, and support for empowerment. Additionally, it has fostered the self-awareness and independent spirit of young girls and encouraged them to take action to pursue their dreams.

After two rounds of space renovations, the re-opened Garden of Girls will continue to provide long-term courses, regular lectures, exhibitions, activities, and more to lead girls to transform into a new force that can influence society. Free venue reservations are also available, hoping that every girl who comes to Garden of Girls can feel relaxed and comfortable.
