The Secondhand Toy Bank is now open! Mayor Lu: Giving secondhand toys new life to accompany children in their growth

Toys serve as companions and supports for children during their growth. In order to give new life to secondhand toys and also teach children the spirit of cherishing and sharing, the Social Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government has established the “Toy Bank” at the Dali Child and Adolescent Services Center. Mayor Hsiu-yen Lu attended the opening ceremony today and joined parent-child volunteers in cleaning up the toys. She stated that usable toys that are no longer needed at home are welcome to be donated. After inspection, repair, disinfection, and categorization, the toys will be transported by a toy resource vehicle to communities for parent-child activities or made available for application by social welfare organizations, community groups, and schools in Taichung City. These toys will accompany more children and give them more joy in their growth.
Mayor Lu, together with parent-child volunteers and children, cleaned up toys today. Mayor Lu carefully repaired the missing keys of a toy accordion, wearing gloves and meticulously wiping every part of the toy with alcohol. After allowing the toys to air dry, Mayor Lu placed them back in the toy box. Mayor Lu emphasized the significance of this disinfection process, as it not only removes stains but also achieves a sterilizing effect, making it an essential step in the cleaning procedure.
“Toys are the most important companions in children's growth!” Mayor Lu stated that although some toys may no longer be suitable for a child's age as they grow up, it would be a pity to throw them away. Currently, Taichung City has a second-hand goods bank called “Treasure Forest Furniture Recycling Center,” which specifically collects discarded furniture, household items, toys, electrical appliances, and more. After establishing a toy bank, it will specifically focus on collecting toys related to language and cognition, society and culture, hands-on skills, gross motor skills, nostalgic wooden toys, and infant and toddler toys. Stuffed dolls, video game consoles, firearms, and household items will be redirected to the “Treasure Forest Furniture Recycling Center.”
Mayor Lu also highlighted that Taichung City has six parent-child centers that collaborate with the toy bank for toy recycling. The city will continue to increase this number, and in the second half of the year, they plan to establish an additional 15 toy collection stations. Mayor Lu expressed gratitude for the efforts of the city government team and the support from the city council. If anyone who has toys that are no longer needed but still in good condition, they are welcome to donate them to the toy bank and give the toys a new life.
Social Affairs Bureau explained that if the public wants to donate toys, they can either mail them or bring them to the toy bank. The toy bank is located on the 6th floor of the Dali Child and Adolescent Services Center and is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Tuesday to Saturday. Toys can also be delivered to six toy collection stations located in Pinglin, Houli, Nantun, Daya, Dajia Parent-Child Centers, and Shalu Children Welfare Service Center. The schedule for the toy resource vehicle outreach activities will be announced monthly on the Taichung City Toy Bank's Facebook fan page (https://www.facebook.com/tctoysbank). For any related inquiries, you can also contact the toy bank hotline at 04-24823215.
Today's opening ceremony was attended by Mayor Lu, Director Jing-zhi Liao of the Social Affairs Bureau, Councilors Bixiu Lin, Tian-sheng Li, Deyu Lin , and Chairman Zheng-xia Lin of the Down Syndrome Foundation R.O.C. District Chief Zhengzhong Zheng of Dali, along with other officials.
