May 28th is Menstrual Hygiene Day. Social Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government commissioned Taiwan Association of Read and Social Care to hold a press conference titled “Red Grace: Gender-Friendly Services,” which is a press conference of gender equality. This conference was held on May 26th, invited representatives from Education Bureau, Health Bureau, China Medical University Hospital, and Lecheng Temple to attend. The event shows the collaborative efforts of the public and private sectors in emphasizing the importance of menstrual-friendly services and advocating for menstrual equity issues.
Deputy Director Zhong-liang Chen of Social Affairs Bureau stated that this year the city government continues to proactively send sanitary pads to girls who receive living allowances due to special circumstances. Moreover, at 68 social welfare locations, including Taichung Women and New Immigrants Training Centers, Family Welfare Centers, After-school Care Centers, and Food Banks, menstrual products are provided for disadvantaged women and individuals in need. In total, 14,929 packs of sanitary pads were distributed. Deputy Director Chen stated that Taichung City is the second most populous city in Taiwan and has a higher proportion of females than males. In light of the principles of gender equality and Article 12 of the CEDAW Convention, which safeguards women's health, the city government is committed to promoting menstrual-friendly service policies. Furthermore, the government hopes that these efforts will contribute to breaking social taboos surrounding menstruation and increase public awareness and understanding of menstrual issues.
Deputy Director Chen pointed out that the city government is actively promoting gender equality. In addition to concerning various gender-related issues, this year they have implemented the CEDAW City Review Report and initiated diverse programs such as the Gender Equality International Forum, Gender Equality Concert, and Gender Equality Theater. These efforts aim to gradually establish Taichung City into a gender-friendly city and to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goal 5 of United Nations, “Gender Equality,” as well as carry out the spirit of CEDAW. To keep the public informed about gender equality-related activities, information will be regularly updated on the "Gender Equality Section of Taichung City Government" website (https://ge.taichung.gov.tw/index.aspx).
