  Promotion of Gender Equality
 
To celebrate Women's Day, which falls on March 8every year, the Social Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Governmentpushed out a set of "Gender Equality Certificate" postcards, on which people are invited to write down gender equality manifestos and send them to family members and friends. Moreover, the "Gender Equality Farmer Calendar" issued by Taichung City last year was awarded by Executive Yuan the Jinxin Award (金馨獎), which is the highest honor in the promotion of gender equality. All the efforts show that Taichung City has been trying hard to break gender stereotypes and create gender equality.

Organized by Social Affairs Bureau, the press conference to present "Gender Equality Certificate ”was held on March 5, 2015. Deputy Mayor Pan Wen-zhong (潘文忠), Director-general Lue Jen-der (呂建德) of Social Affairs Bureau, City Councilman Liu Shi-chou (劉士州), and Chairperson Huang Rui-ru (黃瑞汝) of Taiwan Association of Reading and Social Care signed the gender equality manifestos on the certificate.Many kidson the scene held the Gender Equality Certificates, while shouting their own expectations for gender equality.

Director-general Lue said, “Our Social Affairs Bureau issued the Gender Equality Farmer Calendar last year. It won the Jinxin Award, the highest honor for special achievement. This is the trophy conferred by the Executive Yuan and I am proud to share the honor with you here today. Forthis year, we have launched the Gender Equality Certificate postcards.You canwrite down your gender equality manifestos and send them to yourself or friends. Let’s work together to break down gender stereotypes.”

Deputy Mayor Pan said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our colleagues of Social Affairs Bureau and Chairperson Huang. It is because of their innovation that they pushed out the Gender Equality Farmer Calendar last year and theGender Equality Certificate this year. The purpose of Gender Equality Certificate is to tell people of all ages to build up the concept of gender equality and to choose their career by considering their own potential. By the way, I also wish to invite all of you to take part in the Gender Equality Assembly to be held on the Calligraphy Greenway on March 7. Let’s work together to breakapart the gender stereotype.”

In 2014, the employment rates for women were 85% in Swedish, 67% in Germany, 58% in Japan, 55% in Korea, and a bit over 50% in Taiwan. Director-general Lue Jen-der of Social Affairs Bureau said, “We have been vigorously promoting gender equality in the society and in the workplace in Taichung City, because wehopes to rise up the female employment rate in Taichung and because women are very important human resources for the rise of Taichung. Besides, we have launched the‘end-to-end daycare subsidy program’ for 0-6 year-old kids and the elder daycare policy, because we hope to promote birth rates in our city.”

Director-general Lue also pointed out, “We can promote gender equality every month. For example, women can act as an officiant in the Ghost Festival and join the army to celebrate the Armed Forces Day. In terms ofoccupations, women may join the police forces and work as scientists while men can work as nurses.”

Chairperson Huang Rui-ru of Taiwan Association of Reading and Social Care pointed out, “There are 38,880 nannies in Taiwan, but only 1168 are men. It shows occupational gender stereotypes are still deep in people’s mind. That is why the Social Affairs Bureau has been quite innovative in breaking apart the gender stereotypes and promoting gender equality.”
