Taichung City Food Bank Adds Four New Alliance Shops

Following the establishment of Hongyuan alliance shop, the first of its kind in Taiwan, in January 2015, the Taichung City Food Bank has recently added four more alliance shops from such charity organizations as the Guang Liang Charity Association (廣亮慈善會), the Taiwan Fund for Children and Family Taichung City South District Branch (家扶基金會台中市南區分事務所), the Catholic Taichung Diocese’s Mutual Love Materials Bank (天主教會台中教區互愛物資銀行), and the Red Cross Shengang Services Center (紅十字會神岡服務處). All the four alliance shops have been open since March 28, 2015. It is expected to help 1,500 persons from disadvantaged families per year.

The Social Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government was happy to announce that the country's first Food Bank alliance shop was set up on January 17 this year and now four more alliance shops mentioned above have also joined in to increase the total number of Food Bank alliance shops to five in such a short time.

The Social Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government has also drafted the country’s first "Food Bank Self-management Decree" and held a public hearing on March 27. It is required by the self-management decree that all the units in Taichung City Government must work together to promote Food Bank. For example, Health Bureau should check food safety, the Agriculture Bureau is responsible for buying agricultural products when they are over-produced, and the Local Tax Bureau should provide tax credits to the donating organizations.

Currently there are in Taichung City three physical food bank entities, 27 distribution stations, and 5 alliance shops. In the future the Social Affairs Bureau will continue to invite more organizations to join the ranks. It is hoped that the concept of Food Bank can take roots in each and every community, the resources can be properly shared without waste, and more disadvantaged families are assisted in time of need.
