Equipped with a library, a computer room, an evergreen learning institute, and a day care center, the Dongshi District Elderly Welfare Service Center organized by the Social Affairs Bureau has become the best gathering place for the elderly in the community. The elderly usually get together to sing and dance. However, it was special on June 3, because many volunteer moms gathered here to wrap zongzi for the elderly, filling the entire space with aromas.
Mayoress Liao Wan-ru said happily, “I have only washed leaves for zongzi before. This is the first time I wrap zongzi and I am very happy to learn the skills after the volunteer moms. Later, we will give the zongzi to our elderly here for the coming Dragon Boat Festival.”
“Our population is aging pretty soon. I hope youngsters will spend more time with their elders. By simply listening to them, you can help them recall good memories of the past and find value of life,” added mayoress Liao.
When distributing the wrapped zongzi to the elderly in the Center, mayoress Liao greeted them in Hakka dialect, making the grandparents very happy. The 88-year-old grandmother Liu Qiu Yueng (劉邱完) handmade fabric zongzi of Hakkatung blossom cloth as a return gift to mayoress Liao, deeply touching her heart.
Nearly 2,000 zongzi were given out to the economically vulnerable people, the high-risk families, the elders living alone, the low-income households, and persons with disabilities in a hope that disadvantaged groups could enjoy hot zongzi and social warmth as well. Mayoress Liao Wan-ru also reminded them that zongzi has relatively high calorie and should be eaten slowly. She also wished every elder a happy Dragon Boat Festival.
