Zhao Shi-chang(趙世昌) and Zhao Yang Xin-zi (趙楊信紫) from Qingshui District, a couple who have been married for 70 years and have 4 children, were representatives for Platinum Wedding couples. They were married during the World War II and were forced to hide from air strikes every day, but the hardship has also firmed up their life-time commitment to each other.
Yang Qin-chi (楊欽池) and Zhao Xiu-tsu (周秀治) from Central District and Zhang Jin-li (章錦立) and Zhang Tong Xiu-feng (章塘秀鳳) from West District, who have married for 60 years, were representatives for Platinum Wedding couples. Born to a rich family, Zhao Xiu-tsu married to Yang Qin-chi of a poor family, but they worked hard together to build up their own business successfully. Successful self-made medicine wholesalers from scratch, Zhang Jin-li and his wife Zhang Tong Xiu-feng have 3 sons and 1 daughter. Among them, one is a PhD degree holder and one is a pharmacist and all of them have made great contributions to the community.
During the recognition ceremony, Mayor Lin Chia-lung firstly conferred awards to each of the three representing couples. Then, they and Mayor Lin started a ritual to wish every married couple to lead a harmonious and happy life forever.
Mayor Lin said, “Every couple has everyday chores to deal with. They may argue or even fight sometimes. What an accomplishment it is to have kept a loving marriage going on for 60 years. That is something we should learn after all the couples.
I hope to turn Taichung into the capital of life, which is friendly to our silver-haired citizens and children,” Mayor Lin pointed out. “That is why we must promote the end-to-end daycare policy to look after our children and our elders, so as to free our young people from worry about how to take care of their kids and parents while they are at work. We will set up as many as possible care stations and Evergreen Happiness schools and centers for silver-haired citizens in the communities. I always hope that our elders can pursue life-long learning, preserve their life wisdom and skills, and spread their value everywhere.
“Moreover, the city government has been subsidizing dentures for our silver-haired citizens. Every elder may be granted NT$ 40,000 at the maximum. Those elders in need please come forward to apply.”
Lue Jen-der (呂建德), Director-general of Social Affairs Bureau, said, “This recognition ceremony aims to render true love stories to inspire the general public and encourage people to enter into marriage in a cautious attitude, so that people will no longer see marriage as a product of instant love. I also hope to turn Taichung into a city full of love and happiness.”
Diva of Taiwanese musicWu Shu-min(吳淑敏) and the most famous puppet song singer Say Qing (西卿) were invited to sing many popular oldies for the silver-haired couples. Moreover, there were also exciting performances of dance troupes and live jazz bands. In addition, two 3D cameras were set up at the scene, one for taking photos in a rare ancient wedding setting and the other in a Western-style church wedding setting. Couples were free to have their pictures taken in either a classical style or a trendy fashion. They can also use the cute photo sticker machine at the scene to personalize their group photos for the couples and families, making the photos rare and interesting.
