Three kinds of games were played in the "2015 Hunger Games‧Cherish Food" event in a hope to let people experience the difficulties faced by the financially disadvantaged people. In Game 1, people played the finger-guessing games towin or lose their food cards and were assigned to either the "rich zone" or the "poor zone" accordingly. It is hoped to make people aware of the main theme that hunger is caused by injustice. In Game 2, people were shown how to take action to fight against poverty and avoid waste by cherishing food, recycling the resources, and leading a healthy life.In Game 3,people took part in a "quiz contest" to get a better understanding of the relationships between climate change and food and the land.
Guests attending the events included Lue Jen-der (呂建德), Director-general of Social Affairs Bureau; Liu Zhao-hui (劉昭惠), Chairperson of the Red Cross Taichung Branch; and representatives from Homemakers' Union (主婦聯盟) and the Wilderness Society (荒野保護協會). They all urged people to fight "hunger" and "waste" by changing their own behaviors as the first step.
Mayor Lin said, “Our City Council has just passed the Taichung City Food Bank Self-Government Ordinance a few days before, and now the Food Bank can assist 2500 disadvantaged families to get rid of hunger every month. In the near future, the Public Welfare Lottery Surplus Fund is expected to subsidize the Food Bank NT$ 10 million, and our Health Bureau is responsible for food safety and helping our charity donors save tax payment.
“On behalf of Taichung City Food Bank and our citizens, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Kerry TJ Logistics Company Limited (嘉里大榮物流股份有限公司) for providing free warehousing space for the frozen food and free transportation for food ingredients. My gratitude also goes to many charity organizations. Our Taichung Food Bank has 3 physical stores and 31 food stations that distribute food regularly. Moreover, 5 units from the private sector have joined our Food Bank system. I hope more private organizations will join us, so that we can promote the Food Bank system to each administrative district soon.”
Social Affairs Bureau said, “The city government is serving as the administrative center for the Food Bank and actively promotes the food aid program. Since August 2012, we have opened three physical stores to raise and distribute food supplies to help 2500 disadvantaged families every month in Taichung City.
“Considering that Taichung City has a vast territory, we have also mobilized community development associations, foundations, churches, temples and other social groups to set up 31 food stations to help our Food Bank distribute food in the regions where the Food Bank has not yet set up physical stores. Many volunteers come over to the 31 food stations on the last Saturday in each month to help us distribute the food packages.
“The Taichung Sales Branch, the Fengyuan Sales Branch and the Shalu Sales Branch of Kerry TJ Logistics Company Limited have been providing us with free transport of food ingredients and its Nantun Cargo Terminal provides free warehousing space for the frozen food. The company has been very helpful to our Food Bank.
“Appropriated with NT$ 10 million from the Public Welfare Lottery Surplus Funds, the Taichung City Food Bank of Love is able to benefit more than 2,500 disadvantaged families every month this year. In 2016, the city government will continued to inject funds into the Taichung City Food Bank of Love, so that we can continue to support the 2500 disadvantaged families. Meanwhile, we will also help establish private alliance shops to expand our Food Bank system to every administrative district.
“We also urge our citizens and business firms to support our call for ‘no wasting food’ campaign and donation of surplus food to the Taichung City Food Bank of Love, so that we can work together for the benefit of more people,” stressed the Social Affairs Bureau.
