43 Enterprise Took Part in 2015 Taichung Corporate Volunteer Day Campaign

Organized by the city government and Topkey Foundation (拓凱教育基金會), the "2015 Taichung Corporate Volunteer Day," which has entered into its 4th year, was held on November 7. More than 1,200 corporate volunteers from 43 enterprises and 36 public interest groups participated in this public service campaign. They served as volunteers for one day at the museums, hospitals, supermarkets, and social welfare institutions. At their carnival held at the Civic Square, Mayor Lin Chia-lung took the oath together with all the volunteers and thanked them for their contribution.

The number of companies participating in this year’s campaign increased by 23 from last year, reaching the goal of doubling the number of corporate volunteers.

Accompanied by Lue Jen-der (呂建德), Director-general of Social Affairs Bureau, Mayor Lin attended the carnival and conferred certificates of appreciation to business firms for fulfilling their corporate social responsibility. City Councilor Zeng Chao-rong (曾朝榮) also joined the festivities.

Mayor Lin expressed special thanks to Shen Wen-zhen (沈文振), Chairman of Topkey Foundation, for his leadership. “I proposed to turn Taichung into the capital of volunteers in Taiwan 10 years ago, but Chairman Shen has already taken action for 4 years. Under his leadership, the campaign has turned out to be bigger and bigger and better and better.”

Mayor Lin said that he is still looking forward to turning Taichung into the capital of volunteers. “The Joint Services Guest House located on Meicun Road is now allocated to our city government, and our Social Affairs Bureau has already budgeted NT$ 1 billion to turn it into a cultivation center for non-profit workers and volunteers. In addition, I hope the central government can work with Taichung City Government to turn the former Provincial Council Hall, or the current Provincial Advisory Council Hall into a national and international volunteering service center in Taiwan. I believe Taichung citizens will be proud of this center,” added Mayor Lin.

Chen Zhong-liang (陳仲良), Deputy Director-general of Social Affairs Bureau, who assisted the corporate volunteers to recycle resources at the Pozilin Park (寶之林園區) in the morning, said that companies should also use their core competencies to make a concrete contribution to the society and the environment. “One of the best way is to provide volunteering service,” added Deputy Director-general Chen.

Social Affairs Bureau pointed out that the Corporate Volunteer Day campaign is a service program organized by business firms and nonprofit organizations. “On this particular day, business owners lead their employees to provide volunteering services for one day. Business firms should not limit themselves to the role of donators any longer. They should take an actual part in public services. It should be more meaningful to take action for mutual assistance,” said the Social Affairs Bureau.

Lue Jen-der, Director-general of Social Affairs Bureau, called on all business owners to encourage their employees to participate in volunteer jobs. “You will not only do good for the public but also shape your corporate culture and improve employee morale. One of our visions at the city government is to turn Taichung into the capital of volunteers. I hope more business firms and communities will participate in the Corporate Volunteer Day campaign next year,” Director-general Lue noted.
