Mayor Lin and his wife, Director of Social Affairs Bureau Chien-der Lu were accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of Maria Social Welfare Foundation Mei-ling Chen and Chief of Taichung City Love Home Yu-jun Chen to visit people’s love home bakery shelter workshops of Maria Social Welfare Foundation. They were carefully taught by 3 young kids in sheltered workshops to experience how to press the pastries, fill in the stuffings and shape of the finished products etc. the whole production process of the moon cakes. Also, they have tasted the moon cakes introduced for this year and herb tea to promote the charitable moon cake gift boxes.
Mayor Lin mentioned, for the disabled organizations and charity groups, the sales of self-produced Mid-Autumn Festival moon cakes and the other gifts are very important income for them during the year. He and his wife have been regularly helping the disabled organizations or sheltered workshops to promote the moon cakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival season for more than 10 years. He has joked and said,「this has been our dating model now」. Besides, the sales target is increasing by years, the quantity has been climbing up to 65 thousand boxes last year from 63 thousand boxes in the year before last year. Therefore, the sales of Taichung are targeted at 68 thousand boxes in this year.
Mayor Lin pointed out, so fare we have 25 shops of disabled organizations and shelter workshops in Taichung. In these shops, the physically or mentally disabled people will be coached to make the moon cakes, cookies, bread and hand-made soaps etc. they are expected to learn the specific skill to earn their own livings. As Mid-Autumn Festival is representing gathering so everyone can think about the products made by the disabled people as the first choices as these products are made on their own. These products are not just delicious desserts but also a kind support for the public benefit to care more people.
When the reservations started by the end of August, more than 20 thousand boxes have been sold out from Taichung but there still a gap to the target 68 thousand boxes. Mayor Lin said, the City Government will take the lead to encourage the employees of many departments to purchase these great products. Also, the Social Affairs Bureau and Economic Development Bureau will contact the companies in the industrial park to inform them of such a good promotional information or pass forward. Meanwhile, the citizens are encouraged to show the kindness and purchase the Mid-Autumn Festival gift boxes made by the disabled organizations or sheltered workshops with high recognitions.
Chief Executive Officer of Maria Social Welfare Foundation Mei-ling Chen has said, 4 kinds of moon cakes will be introduced by Maria Social Welfare Foundation, including jujube paste with egg yolk, plum paste, small moon cakes and dark brown sugar yam and mochi etc. And the cover papers of the Mid-Autumn Festival moon cakes gift boxes are the paintings of the children of the the sheltered workers. The sales target is 15 thousand boxes but the sold gift boxes are around 6,000 boxes; we wish more enterprises or individuals to support and help them to achieve the goal.
The officer of Social Affairs Bureau said, all the products made by the disabled people are produced by each of them with two hands sincerely. We wish everyone can recognize their efforts and encourage them. Please take action to show your strong supports for the disabled people by purchasing these good products. In addition, there are lucky draw activities following after the purchases. Any order more than NT$500 in the indicated 25 shops selling the products of the disabled welfare organizations and sheltered workshops in Taichung will be provided with a ticket for lucky draw for the rewards including automatic car, tablets and so on.
