Advocacy of Sexual Equality Taichung Launched the Gender Friendly Neighborhood Campaign

On the eve of this International Women’s Day, the Social Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government specifically held the “Light Up Every District ~Gender Friendly Neighborhood” press conference. Deputy Mayor Ling-Hu Rong-Ta mentioned that he hoped sexual equality in every district of the city could be successfully achieved. He also asked the people there to launch the “Sexual Equality Light Travelling” Plan, in its full scope and depth, for every district to understand the true meaning of sexual equality.

In the “Light Up Every District ~ Gender Friendly Neighborhood” press conference, 80 district magistrates, local representatives and the public were present. The District Magistrates of Taichung City unveiled the “platform for extension of sexual equality.” Each one of the District Magistrates held their program for innovation and vowed their allegiance to sexual equality and the rooting of the sexual equality policy in Taichung.

According to Deputy Mayor Ling-Hu, International Women’s Day is the commemoration of the female equality movement and is also the celebration of the contribution and success of females in politics, economics and the society. He hoped that the people from all districts could follow the footprints of sexual equality through the sexual equality innovation programs in the districts to launch the series of “Sexual Equality Light Travelling.” In this event, all of the families, both the elderly and young ones, could be deeply impressed by the activities held in the districts for the advocacy of sexual equality. Furthermore, they could also realize the true meaning of sexual equality in entertainment.

Deputy Mayor Ling-Hu emphasized that the city will organize teams to supervise and give recommendations to the local administrations, and he hoped that sexual equality as well as safety for women and children could be disseminated to every corner of the districts. Deputy Mayor Ling-Hu further thanked Huan Rai-Yu, the tutor of today’s event, for his long-term dedication to the advocacy of gender friendliness. He hoped that the sexual equality innovation programs in the districts could help encourage the “effort of the females” to be carried forward.

According to Huang Rai-Yu, a member of the Gender Equity Education Association and the tutor of today, the latest figures on gender released by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics of the Executive Yuan indicated that sexual equality in Taiwan is second to none in Asia, and ranked 8th worldwide. After the 2018 general election, the number of female public officials and local representatives rose significantly, about 37.5% of the City or County Mayors are females. This is the first time since 1997 that more than 1/3 of the seats were occupied by female candidates. This is obviously the result of the policy of sexual equality, so that females could have the opportunity to show their abilities and achieve self-actualization without constraints.

According to the Social Affairs Bureau, the local administrative district is the foundation for community development and it is also the most extensive social organization. Through the education on sexual equality, the local representatives could be more sensitive to this issue. Likewise, each district has also proposed their specific program with its distinctive feature. For example, the “Love in the South Without Gender Barrier” sports day organized in the south district and the “Gender Friendly Map for Parent-Child Pleasure Travelling in the West” event organized in the west district. In addition, the Social Affairs Bureau has also unveiled the “Gender Friendly Environment Checklist,” the first of its kind in Taiwan. Accordingly, the local representatives were asked to check if their local environment is friendly enough to the needs of both sexes including the facilities of the lanes and alleys, the lighting facilities, road surface, balconies, parking lots, public toilets, parks, recreational centers and landmarks of gender. They should also spread the notion of “Sexual Equality in the Lanes and Alleys” to every corner of Taichung.
