Between March 13 and May 12, Taiwan Active Aging Association (AAA) organized the exhibition of “Dear, I am Getting Old” at the National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung. On behalf of Taichung City Mayor, Lu Shiow-yen, Deputy Mayor Yang Chiung-Ying offered her congratulations on this exhibition. She recognized the focus of AAA on the trend of the ageing society through the promotion of increasing awareness of the development of the aged society. The City Government will continuously promote preventive care policies for the healthy senior and their active participation in the society. Creativity and resources from the private sector are integrated to build Taichung into an age-friendly city.

The honored guests included Deputy Mayor Yang, President Yang Chih-liang of AAA; Deputy Director of Department of Lifelong Education, Ministry of Education, Yen Pao-yueh; Director of National Museum of Natural Science, Wei-Hsin Sun; CEO of Nam Liong Group, Hsiao Deng-Po; President of Yue Yuan Education Foundation, Lee Yi-Nan; Secretary-General of Chinese LOHAS Life Industrial Development Association, Mr. Chuang Chen-Lu; and Secretary-General of Social Affairs Bureau, Mr. Liao Tsung-hou attended the press conference of “Dear, I am Getting Old” exhibition in Taichung.

Founded in 2015, AAA has been long focused on the age-friendly environment in Taiwan. The exhibition of “Dear, I am Getting Old” was consecutively held at the National Taiwan Science Education Center and National Science and Technology Museum respectively in Taipei and Kaohsiung. This show was first exhibited at the National Museum of Natural Science.

According to Deputy Mayor Yang, by the end of last year, Taichung City has a senior citizens population of about 340,000 accounting for 12.16% of the total population. Taichung City Mayor Lu cares for life and welfare of the senior citizens and has been devoted to preventive care policies for the healthy senior and the promotion of active social participation of the elderly. Additionally, on July 1st, Taichung will officially resume subsidies of healthcare insurance for the elderly to lessen the economic burden on them when seeking healthcare.

Deputy Mayor Yang thanked the support of AAA and other participants to enable this meaningful exhibition in Taichung and to call for the care of the aged society. The Taichung City Government will continue integrating innovation of the private sector and abundant resources to work together to build Taichung into an elderly-friendly city.

The President of AAA, Mr. Yang Chih-liang, pointed out that the core of the Exhibition is “active aging” with the joint participation and creation of the elderly. Some of the elderly were contacted and trained to serve as guides. The elderly has been provided with a stage to express themselves and it is hoped that the public would change their stereotypical impression of the elderly to improve care and concern for the aged in society.

The Director of National Museum of Natural Science, Wei-Hsin Sun said that the Exhibition, “Dear, I am Getting Old” for him is a very close one because he used the same venue when preparing the “Wandering in the Solar System” exhibition that makes this Exhibition very interesting. The Exhibition is an informative, sensitive, sensible and artistic one and he believed that unlike those held in Taipei and Kaohsiung, different feelings will be communicated to the visitors.

The Bureau of Social Affairs said that at present, diverse and continuous services have been planned for the healthy, sub-healthy, and disabled elderly by Taichung City Government focusing on preventive care by promoting community care sites, senior citizen adult education programs, the elderly life expert program, and itinerant services for elderly cultural, healthy, recreational activities to provide the elderly with channels to participate in the society. In 2019, the “Engaging the Elderly and the Youth for Happy Taichung” program will be launched to plan a series of activities for grandparents and younger generations to interact and cooperate. By sharing the life wisdom of the elderly and teaching the younger generation to correctly understand the issue of aging, different generations can live in harmony through appropriate engagement.

According to the Bureau of Social Affairs, the psychological factor is one of the keys to maintaining the health of the elderly and in the future, health promotion events will be continuously organized to demonstrate potential and diverse life manners of the elderly. Through the promotion of active aging, the public will gain a better understanding about “aging” and assist the elderly to enjoy their life with dignity.
