On April 13th, the Bureau of Social Affairs invited 30 social workers awarded for their outstanding performance to share their experiences while enjoying a cup of coffee. Among them was the senior social worker, Tsui Chun-Chieh, who has been working in the filed for 22 years. During his work, he has often been at the front line to contact clients with diverse and complicated problems. He has also seen the growth in the number of disabled families, and he has reflected on the changes in his life and the importance of caring for the disadvantaged, so he believes that being a social worker is his ideal job.
The awarded and relatively new social worker, Wang Ching-Hui, said that her mother is a hair dresser and from her mom, she learned how to listen to others. She used to be “a drop-out in social work,” but in the end, she found that the job was the best choice for her.
Director Li acted as a barista and made coffee for these social workers to show his appreciation. He also watched the interview film of the award recipients with them. Among the group was the recipient of the Special Contribution Award, who has served the indigenous communities for 30 years. This individual has inspired his friends and family members to also become social workers. He referred to himself as a veteran of social work and he stated that social work is his lifelong vision. The recipient of the Heritage Award, Liu Pei-Ching, works for the Hondao Senior Citizen Welfare Foundation as a section chief and helps the seniors with disabilities.
According to Director Li, the social workers in the film pursue the spirit to “sacrifice oneself for the good of a large number of people,” which is an act that has touched everyone. The City Government actively safeguards the legal rights and individual safety of social workers, including their salaries, labor rights, legal protection, individual safety training, supportive measures and relevant mechanisms. He also hopes that the public and private sectors can jointly create a friendly work environment for social workers to achieve safe employment, services and management.
Additionally, the Bureau of Social Welfare also considered the long work hours of and high pressure on social workers and organized training camps to promote the physical and psychological health of social works as well as enhance the supportive measures available. The social workers should care for both others and themselves in order to have more energy to help others.
