Disability rights advocates including experts and scholars such as committee members Yu-yu Wang, Pei-chun Pan, and attorney Chiung-chia Lin all attended the public hearing to offer their professional advice and guidance. The Social Affairs Bureau indicated that everyone's opinions will be consolidated after the public hearing for the purposes of carrying out the subsequent legislative procedures.
Social Affairs Bureau Director Yun-chieh Li commented that the rights of disabled people represent the civic awareness of a city and a country, therefore Taichung City has become the first municipality in the country to formulate the self-government ordinance by taking into reference the People with Disabilities Rights Protection Act and the ideology of creating an accessible environment. The ultimate aim is to increase awareness of the rights of disabled persons.
Director-General Li also suggested that after his dialogue with family members of several disabled persons, the problems they encounter span across various aspects of life, therefore integrated services from different departments are required. In the future, the city hall will establish the cross-agency Taichung City Disability Rights Protection and Promotion Team and Taichung City Promotion Team in accordance with the self-government ordinance. The functioning of these task forces will be regularly reviewed to reinforce lateral communication across relevant bureaus and agencies, and their progress will be monitored in order to materialize the protection of disability rights.
