The Happiness of Diversity – International Day of Disabled Persons Activities Kick off in Taichung City

The United Nations has designated December 3 every year as the International Day of Disabled Persons, and Taichung City is also supporting the spirit of the event by hosting the 5th Anniversary of CRPD – Diversity, Happiness and Social Inclusion event. From now on, achievement exhibitions, singing contests, funfair, little YouTuber and drawing activities will be held, and the public is invited to participate in the activities, showing their support for disabled persons.
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year, so Social Affairs Bureau convened the kick-off press conference at the Taichung City Hall on Taiwan Boulevard on November 6. The letters of the acronym CRPD are used to design the event's slogans, while Social Affairs Bureau Deputy Director-General Chen Kun-huang commended charitable enterprises that have donated rehabilitation buses this year as well as outstanding rehabilitation bus drivers on behalf of Mayor Shiow-yen Lu, thanking the benevolence of the society.
According to Deputy Director-General Chen, many disabled persons have overcome their physical limitations and rose to prominence across different industries. Great examples include this year's Golden Bell Awards recipient Yu Hsiu-chih as well as disabled mouth painters from Taichung City such as Hsu Shih-huang, Chou Yu-ju, and Kao Shu-chuan. The city government will continue launching various services for disabled persons in order to become their strongest support by protecting their rights.
For this year's International Day of Disabled Persons, 6 disabled person community resource center and home care worker service providers were invited to participate in the event to showcase their service features, achievements, and artworks by disabled persons. The artworks produced include decoupage, galaxy bottle, leather crafts, and paintings, etc.
There are currently 270 rehabilitation bus drivers in Taichung City servicing disabled persons. Of the outstanding rehabilitation bus drivers commended today, 3 of them have over 8 years of experience. In particular, bus driver Chang I-cheng commented that he feels rehabilitation buses can really make a difference in the disabled persons' lives, whether it is taking them to the hospital or helping them engage in social activities, therefore he is grateful to be given the opportunity to assist and serve disabled persons.
Social Affairs Bureau pointed out that the city government is using the profits generated from Taichung City's Public Welfare Lottery to organize community resource centers, home care worker support programs and the International Day of Disabled Persons. This year, various service achievements are combined to design a series of activities such as the achievement exhibition held from today until November 14, the singing contest on November 16, as well as the commendation ceremony on November 6 and 30. Other interesting activities include the funfair, little YouTuber, and drawing activity on November 30.
