Materializing Sustainable Development – Gender Equality City Forum Kicks Off in Taichung

In supporting the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs), Taichung City Social Affairs Bureau hosted the 2019 Gender Equality City Forum at the Millennium Hotel Taichung on 11/27. Centered on the theme of Sustainable City Development, the forum stresses the importance of accommodating the needs of women, gender, and other disadvantaged minorities when devising a city's public policies. In addition, the forum explores ways to materialize gender equality through policy and infrastructure in order to achieve the goals of sustainable development.
According to Deputy Secretary-General Huang Kuo-Jung, although gender equality is an independent item within the UN's 17 SDGs, the planning of other SDGs must also place emphasis on gender equality, therefore, the city government has organized the gender awareness empowerment program in conjunction with various friendly policies, in hopes of building a gender-friendly city and demonstrating Taichung's determination in promoting Internationalization and Local Developments.
The Social Affairs Bureau commented that gender-friendly space is a key element in materializing gender equality, and the city government has already established a gender quality environmental assessment system that will be applied to major events such as the 2020 Taiwan Lantern Festival. The aim is to create a gender-friendly environment through this system.
Important representatives from government agencies and NGOs across the Asia-Pacific region have turned out for today's Gender Equality City Forum, including United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) Standing Committee Co-Chair Stephany Uy-Tan, former chairperson of The Non-Governmental Organization Committee on the Status of Women (NGO CSW) Susan O'Malley, Plan International youth employment project specialist Erika Menez, Japanese Children's Water Safety Group Founder Tomoko Yamada, and Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) President Mrs. Nguyen Thi. Together, they shared their successful experiences and innovative thinking in city infrastructure and public policies, hoping to realize friendly city governance and engender sustainable development.
