The Chong Yang Festival is coming up and on behalf of Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen, Deputy Mayor Chen Tzi-Ching today (the 23rd) visited the centenarians, Liu Kun, at the age of 101 years old and Chang Chun-Sen and Wang Chang Mi both at the age of 100 years old by presenting the Chong Yang cash gift of NT$10,000 each and at the same time, he also gave them gold sheets, Chong Yang gift from the Central Government as well as certificates of honor to wish them "longevity."
Deputy Mayor Chen asked these grandparents to share their secrets of longevity and Grandpa Liu Kun, who is a fan of Peking opera, said he maintains a healthy eating habit and is optimistic. Grandpa Chang Chun-Sen, the winner of the 46th National Model Award for the Elderly People said for him, the secret of longevity is early to bed and early to rise and he is always in a pleasant mood. Deputy Mayor told their family members to respect and honor the elderly and cherish every moment of family time with the elderly.
Deputy Mayor Chen pointed out that Taichung City has an elderly population of about 380,000 and the Taichung City Government will continuously promote preventive and caring policies for the elderly to build Taichung into a livable city for the elderly.
Deputy Director General of the Social Welfare Bureau, Chen Kun-Huang said Taichung City restores its program to lessen the burdens on the children of the elderly by subsidizing senior welfare and caring stations. Evergreen senior learning centers in the community have been increasingly established to encourage the elderly to go out and promote their mental and physical health. Additionally, for centenarians actually residing in Taichung, they will receive cash welfare gifts of NT$6,000 per month.
